Evolution of Human Musicality: the Memory Modulation Theory

چکیده

The evolutionary basis for the development of music in humans has been an enduring mystery. The theory presented here posits that musicality evolved in humans by conferring direct fitness benefits by enabling hominid communicators to influence the persistence of memories of information communicated to other hominids via a musical “coding” process. This ability provided increasing adaptive advantages as the plasticity of hominid behaviors increased. Seen from this general communications-theoretic perspective, musicality can actually be defined as just that set of acousticalbased coding protocols that hominids developed to more effectively modulate memories. This theory also has important implications beyond the specifics of hominid evolution to more generalized animal, as well as artificial, communications environments.

Without it no music: cognition, biology and evolution of musicality.

Musicality can be defined as a natural, spontaneously developing trait based on and constrained by biology and cognition. Music, by contrast, can be defined as a social and cultural construct based on that very musicality. One critical challenge is to delineate the constituent elements of musicality. What biological and cognitive mechanisms are essential for perceiving, appreciating and making ...

Cognition and the Evolution of Music: Pitfalls and Prospects

What was the role of music in the evolutionary history of human beings? We address this question from the point of view that musicality can be defined as a cognitive trait. Although it has been argued that we will never know how cognitive traits evolved (Lewontin, 1998), we argue that we may know the evolution of music by investigating the fundamental cognitive mechanisms of musicality, for exa...

His concerns about dealing with ethics orig...
